ALAKKAVU Devi Temple is situated at Ala, Chengannur, 5 km. south from Chengannur railway station, private bus stand and KSRTC bus stand. This temple stands ahead among other holy shrines due to the peculiarities pertaining to the main deity worshipped here. This is a rare and unique murthi ie. vanadurga, vibrant with spiritual power that exerts an enriching influence on the devotees. It is considered to be a thousand years old. Old times have been reminiscing many legendary events about this sacred temple and its supreme deity, Vanadurga devi, who is also known as Alakkavil Amma.
Alakkavil Devi is Dharmadaiva of many celebrities like film Actor Mohanlal in addition to the native people.
This temple originally belongs to the Alakkavil Illam. Now the temple is administered by Alakkavu Devaswom consisting male members of Five branches of the family and Adv. Prakash D.Namboodiri is one karyadarshi. Poojas are performed twice in a day and Thanthric rites are administered by the Thazhamon family. Devi chaithanya is day by day increasing as all the rituals and rites are done fully scientifically, thanthrically and with dedicated sincerity.
Inside the Sanctum Sanctorum (Sreekovil), which faces east, is the glorious idol of the Supreme Mother of the Universe, resplendent with four arms and effulgent face depicting motherly affection. The main idol is calm minded Goddess, Vanadurga Devi. The idol has Vaishnava features as is evident from the weapons in the four hands. Chakra and Counch in the two upper hands and the lower left arm is resting at the waist and abhaya mudra in the right arm. From this itself it is evident that Vashnava power is dominant in Devi.
This is the only South Indian Temple which embraces the great peculiarity and magic power of Vanadurga murthy. All those who come to Devi's abode and pray from the heart will be blessed by the Devi with prosperity, good health, education, employment, marriage, children etc. The simple darshan of Devi cause to prosperity in life.The temple is Known as ALAKKAVIL DEVI TEMPLE and is open all days in the morning 6 am -10 am and in the evening 5.30 am - 7.30 am. On tuesdays and fridays special poojas are conducted.
